Mahabaleshwar & Satara: Strawberries, Waterfalls and That Fresh Mountain Air

From strawberry farms and Mapro Garden to Satara's Kaas Plateau and Thoseghar Falls—a relaxed guide to two of Maharashtra's most loved hill getaways.

Mahabaleshwar & Satara: Strawberries, Waterfalls and That Fresh Mountain Air

Mahabaleshwar and Satara are the kind of places you plan once and then keep returning to. One’s all strawberries, viewpoints, and old-school hill-station vibes; the other gives you Kaas, Thoseghar, and a more laid-back, “real” Maharashtra feel. Together they make for a perfect long weekend or a relaxed week exploring the Western Ghats.

Mahabaleshwar: Why People Keep Coming Back

Mahabaleshwar sits about 120 km from Pune and 260 km from Mumbai. It’s been a favourite since the British era, and the town still has that mix of bungalows, gardens, and stunning views. The air is cool, the strawberries are famous, and there’s enough to do without rushing.

Arthur’s Seat and the Famous Points

Arthur’s Seat, Wilson Point, and Elephant’s Head Point are the classic viewpoints. You get sweeping views of the valleys and, on a clear day, the Konkan coast. They’re popular for a reason—go early or late to avoid the biggest crowds and get the best light.

Venna Lake

Right in the heart of town, Venna Lake is where you go for a gentle boat ride or a walk around the shore. It’s peaceful and very “Mahabaleshwar”—no thrill rides, just calm and green.

Mapro Garden

Mapro has become almost synonymous with Mahabaleshwar. The garden is colourful and well-kept, and the café does the famous strawberry cream, jams, and syrups. It’s a bit touristy but fun—especially with kids or if you want a relaxed hour with a view and something sweet.

Strawberry Farms

If you’re there in season (roughly November–February), ask your driver or hotel about strawberry farms where you can pluck or buy fresh. Nothing beats eating strawberries that were in the field a few hours ago.

Satara: Kaas, Waterfalls and a Different Pace

Satara is about 65 km from Mahabaleshwar and 110 km from Pune. It’s less “hill station” and more “small city with amazing nature around it.” The two big draws are Kaas Plateau and Thoseghar Falls.

Kaas Plateau

Kaas is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Maharashtra’s most famous biodiversity spots. For a few weeks after the monsoon (usually September–October), the plateau turns into a carpet of wildflowers—pink, yellow, white. It’s stunning, but it’s also fragile. Visit only on designated paths and don’t pluck or trample. Permits and vehicle rules apply, so check before you go.

Thoseghar Falls

Thoseghar is a series of waterfalls about 20 km from Satara. After a good monsoon they’re powerful and beautiful. There are viewpoints and steps—wear shoes with grip and be careful near the water. Monsoon and early post-monsoon (September–October) are the best time.

Rough Distances and Time

  • Pune to Mahabaleshwar: ~120 km, about 2.5–3 hours by cab
  • Pune to Satara: ~110 km, about 2–2.5 hours
  • Mahabaleshwar to Satara: ~65 km, about 1.5–2 hours
  • Mumbai to Mahabaleshwar: ~260 km, about 5–6 hours

When to Go

October to June works well for Mahabaleshwar—cool and clear. For Satara’s Kaas and Thoseghar, plan around the monsoon: Kaas blooms in September–October; the falls are best right after the rains. Summers can be hot in Satara, so hill time in Mahabaleshwar and early-morning or late-afternoon for Satara sights is a good plan.

Getting There in Comfort

Both Mahabaleshwar and Satara are well connected by road from Pune. From Mumbai it’s a longer but scenic drive. A cab takes the stress out of ghats and parking—you can nap, enjoy the views, or plan the next stop. At Intercity.cab we do Pune–Mahabaleshwar, Pune–Satara, and Mumbai–Mahabaleshwar regularly. You can also combine both in one trip: Pune → Mahabaleshwar → Satara (or the other way) and back.
